The Baroque orchestral suite, in which a grand overture was followed by a suite of dances, survived well into our century. Enescu's Second Suite is a case in point. True to form, it begins with a movement called "Overture" and continues with a selection of Baroque-style dances; only the tunes are just as likely to derive from Romanian folk music. A delightful work. The Third Suite, by contrast, abandons any Baroque pretensions and simply illustrates life in a Romanian village. It's a late piece, very sophisticated and refined.
